Designing Photographs

Photography is a journey and every picture is the product of the moment, whether arranged or spontaneous. What you see and feel, and how you interpret a scene or subject today will almost certainly change tomorrow. I am always looking to improve composition and hence the communication in a picture. I wish to feel that I am progressing in both my skills and perceptions.

You may discover that you already comprehend many of the general ideas in design but wish to take a refresher. I know that, after making photographs for forty years, through researching for my book Photograph Australia, I have had my eyes opened afresh. Now when I'm out and about with my cameras, I see new and better ways to approach the arrangement of the elements I am photographing.

Which composition best represents the beach at Manly Sydney, the aerial, the landscape or the close-up?

These images were taken over three days in and around the mall and beach area in Manly, Sydney. I exposed over 2,000 images in an attempt to capture the spirit of this vibrant locality.
